How do you wear a bow tie?

Wear your bow tie with dignity. How do you hear that?

We often get the question: What should it be like? How should I carry my bow? What material should I buy, how big should it be, and what are the best colors?

What is the best material for a bow tie?

The material of the bow tie you wear should preferably match the material of the lapels on your jacket, and the piping along the seam of your trousers (should you wear a tuxedo). By lapel, we mean the collar of the jacket that runs across the chest. So, if you're wearing a black tie with satin or silk on the lapel, you'll want the bow tie to be shiny. In this case, choose a satin or silk bow tie. Are you wearing a suit or a jacket? Don't make the bow tie too shiny and choose a nice fabric, such as wool or cotton.

What is the best size for my bow tie?

The size of the bow tie shouldn't be excessive; it's best to match the size to the width of your lapel. If you have very wide lapels (see James above), you can also improve the size of your bow tie a bit (James still wears it modestly). If you're wearing a jacket with thin lapels (which you often see on tuxedos), consider the size of your bow tie. And keep it small and refined.

What color is my bow tie?

Color. Oh. There aren't so many rules, but for a first date, you can say you want a bow tie to subtly add something to the overall look. Without you or your outfit distracting the attention of those accompanying you to your arm. But that applies to your entire appearance anyway: Everything revolves around your arm candy (!), don't be the center of attention. So, there you go. Back to color. We don't recommend a tone-on-tone bow tie (the same color as your shirt). It can easily stand out from the background. Locks are the bow, the base on which your head rests.

Untied or pretied?

It's best to go for a self-tied bow tie. After all, everyone already has one, so a self-tie bow tie can be a beautiful decoration. And show off your unique personality. Therefore, the bow tie shouldn't be tied too perfectly; the beauty lies in the slight imperfection or the too-quickly stiffened variation. So don't be too hard on yourself. And there's nothing you can do yourself—once you've got it (and it takes a while!). Think of it like shoelaces; YouTube videos will take you a long way.
